poster – postart – post art – after the art
Arts and culture are the soul of a city, setting its tone and tempo. As a photographer, I’ve often wondered how to capture it. Walking through the streets of my hometown, Vienna, I noticed that street posters carry the headlines of the city’s cultural life – they announce exhibition openings, festivals and song releases to busy boulevards and quiet side-streets. In the frantic race to keep the city’s cultural life vibrant, posters are superimposed in a matter of days and create thick coatings of the city’s walls. My series is an archeological study of sorts, examining the layers of culture that I found while walking across various cities. Over time, posters take on a life of their own – some blend into the urban landscape, others merge with previous layers and morph into magnificent puzzles of colour and shapes. In sharing my series with you, I hope to convey the feeling of cultural continuity and belonging that I found in the streets of Vienna, New York and many more.
